The Importance of Sensitivity/Diversity Reading

Sensitivity and Diversity Reading is a type of Beta Reading where individuals go over a manuscript and call out problematic passages that can further harm a marginalized community. While most people focus on abolishing the use of harmful stereotypes pertaining to cultural/racial representation, many sensitivity and diversity readers also strive to break down the stereotypes, biases and negative language towards sexual and domestic violence, disability, neurodivergence, and more.
All creators can benefit from a Sensitivity/Diversity Reader, from authors to screenwriters; comic creators to game developers: if your cast includes marginalized individuals, a Sensitivity/Diversity Reader should be utilized.

How Do I Know if I Need a Sensitivity/Diversity Reader?
When writing about complex topics, Sensitivity/Diversity Readers can be the difference between an "Okay Story" and an Amazing Story. Often, we tend to use past trauma and lived experiences to make our books more relatable. What if we haven't lived those experiences, though, and still want to include characters who have/are? This is where Sensitivity/Diversity Readers come in.
While many writers tend to shy away from having their work checked over out of fear or arrogance, Sensitivity/Diversity Reading is an essential part of the writing process and should not be skipped. These individuals can help with a variety of topics including but not limited to:
-
Substance Abuse
-
Neurodivergence
-
Chronic Illness and Disability
-
Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation
-
Ethnic, Racial, and Cultural Diversity
-
Domestic and/or Sexual Violence; Abuse
-
Kink/BDSM practices, dynamics and environments
-
Religious Traditions
-
Homelessness
-
Social, Economic Structures
-
Loss and Suicide
It is imperative to note that while Sensitivity/Diversity Readers can be monumental in creating a diverse world, writers should not attempt to write from the perspective of a marginalized community focusing on diversities they've never personally experienced. While the inclusion of marginalized communities is always appreciated, if you are not a part of that marginalized community you should not try to write about what it's like to be a part of it regardless of the use of Sensitivity/Diversity Readers.
While all Sensitivity/Diversity Readers set their own prices, most authors can expect to pay between $50 to $300 USD for manuscripts up to 100k words; a worthwhile investment. While Lynn tries to be budget friendly, her pricing is created based on the size of the manuscript, the type of read being done, how much emotional labor needs to be extended to assist a writer in making the corrections, and more. She does offer some free spots but they are incredibly limited.
Indeed she does, and on a wide variety of topics!
